January 17th learn about Rochester to Canada “cruise” – a different era

Daily passenger cruises between Rochester and Cobourg, Canada started in 1909 and continued through 1950.  Many Rochestarians remember the service and have fond memories of the 10-hour cruise.  Between Memorial Day and late September, up to 1,000 passengers could enjoy the trip across Lake Ontario on a ferryboat equipped with a dining area, picnic area, orchestra and dance floor.  Once in Cobourg, passengers could shop on Main St. and stroll through the town square.

On January 17th from 7-9pm in the Fairport Public Library Community Room, Tom Brewer, a member of the NY Museum of Transportation will present a talk about the “Cobourg Boat” as it was referred to.  Tom’s speech, “A Steamer Trip on Lake Ontario: Rochester, NY to Cobourg, ON”, will take you through the history of this special trip before cars were prevalent and time had a very different meaning.
